About Puszcza Augustowska Forest

Puszcza Augustowska, also known as the Augustów Forest, is one of Poland’s largest and most ecologically significant forest complexes, covering parts of the Podlaskie Voivodeship near the borders with Belarus and Lithuania. Spanning approximately 1,300 square kilometers, this forest is characterized by a mosaic of coniferous and mixed woods, peat bogs, rivers, and over 100 lakes, including Lake Necko and Lake Sajno. The terrain is gently rolling with numerous glacial landforms such as moraine hills and kettle holes, creating a diverse habitat supporting species such as elk, wild boar, wolves, and a variety of rare birds like the white-tailed eagle and black stork. Historically, the forest has been a traditional hunting and gathering ground for local communities and has seen limited human disturbance, preserving its natural state.

Outdoor enthusiasts are drawn to Puszcza Augustowska for its peaceful hiking trails meandering through dense woodlands, scenic canoe routes along interconnected rivers and lakes, and birdwatching opportunities, particularly in protected reserves like the Augustów Primeval Forest Nature Reserve. The forest also plays an important role in regional water retention and flood prevention. Visitors appreciate the blend of wilderness with accessible rural villages offering traditional culture and hospitality. With no official national park status but strong landscape protection, Puszcza Augustowska provides a serene experience for those wanting to explore less crowded, authentically wild Eastern European forest landscapes.
